House passes budget resolution
The House passed a budget resolution on party lines except for one Republican voting no, leaving only a two-vote margin in favor of the bill. The resolution is the first step in a process that could lead to a Republican-crafted budget that would only require a majority in the Senate without the threat of a Democratic filibuster. If the House bill survives Senate scrutiny it would potentially add trillions of dollars to the federal debt over 10 years and increase the debt ceiling by $4 trillion, erasing any reasonable claim the Republicans might have to fiscal responsibility. It would also require $$1.5trillion to $2 trillion in spending cuts with as much as $800 billion expected to come from Medicaid and other programs for low-income families.
